I spent two weeks at the OU Campus in Europe. Lisandro was welcoming from the beginning and he was an exceptional instructor. He focused on us understanding the fundamentals of cataract surgery and was very supportive of our individual surgical journey. First of all: it’s expensive but it is definitely so so worth it, especially if you have less experience. As for me, I already have done more than 300 cases in real eyes and could still benefit enormously from one week training rigorously with the simulator. There are 3 simulators so 3 students can train at once. Everyone has their own simulator so no need to worry about splitting up training times. There is one mentor that is available during work day hours 8 am to 4 pm. You are going to have a daily curriculum and work through challenging tasks in the simulator which include all basic phaco steps from start to end (except incisions and hydrating incisions). You are going to learn the 3 major techniques for phaco (divide and conquer, stop and chop, phaco chop), all chop techniques. My mentor was Lissandro and he was an amazing teacher. He could explain everything very well and you just immediately notice that he loves to pass on knowledge unlike most of phaco surgeons you encounter in the world. I could ask all kind of questions, he spectated you movements and gave all kind of advice on how to improve. Ofc it’s dependent on how hard you work during the time there but after this week my skills regarding the capsulorhexis, cracking, chopping and my one handed ability for micromovements improved so much - so much that it probably would have taken me another 300 cases to reach that kind of easiness that I feel in my hand now. I did lots of my surgical movements in the eye with my non dominant hand supporting the dominant hand for stabilization but I can do everything one handed now..even the rhexis with my non dominant hand! It’s incredible how all the training you did on the simulator translates very well to real life eyes. Complication management is also something really important that’s included in the curriculum. I attended the Cataract Academy program at Oftalmo University in Barcelona, and I must say it has been one of the best—if not the best—theoretical and hands-on trainings I have ever experienced. Throughout an intense week in this “cataract drill camp,” the instructors work to instill in your mind and hands as much surgical knowledge and skill as humanly possible. Lisandro is an exceptional teacher, colleague, and motivator, and he manages to build your confidence while advancing your surgical abilities.
